MAYSLES EYEWEAR

2009 HAS BEEN QUITE THE YEAR FOR ALBERT MAYSLES. THE AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER WORKED ON THREE FILMS, FINISHED TWO, OPENED THE MAYSLES CINEMA IN HARLEM, AND CELEBRATED HIS 83RD BIRTHDAY. AS IF THAT WEREN'T ENOUGH, MAYSLES COLLABORATED WITH EYEWEAR EXTRAORDINAIRE, BARTON PERRIERA, TO PRODUCE A COLLECTION BASED ON HIS SIGNATURE BLACK RIMMED GLASSES.

MAYSLES, WHO BROUGHT US SUCH FILMS AS GIMME SHELTER AND GREY GARDENS, IS NO STRANGER TO FASHION. AS A CHILD MAYSLES TAUGHT HIMSELF TO SEW AND AS AN ADULT, HE DOCUMENTED THE FASHION FEARLESS LIKE THE STONES, THE BEATLES, AND OF COURSE, THE EDIE'S. ALTHOUGH ALBERT IS USUALLY BEHIND THE CAMERA, HIS OWN STYLE IS SOMETHING WORTH DOCUMENTING. RETRO SCHOLAR MEETS DEBONAIR GENTLEMAN, ALBERT AND HIS SWEATER-CENTRIC WARDROBE WILL BE TAKING CENTER STAGE IN THE UPCOMING SELF-PORTRAIT, HANDHELD AND FROM THE HEART, WHICH WILL CELEBRATE HIS 50 YEARS AS A FILMMAKER.

BARTON PERRIERA FOR ALBERT MAYSLES EYEWEAR IS AVAILABLE AT BARNEYS, $350-365. $25 FROM EACH PAIR GOES TO THE MAYSLES INSTITUTE, PRESERVING THE WORK OF THE MAYSLES BROTHERS AND HELPING OTHERS TO BEGIN THEIR OWN.
