Sierra Club is Not Against a Bridge in Stillwater - Against the Expensive Monstrosity Bachmann Wants

The media often misrepresents the Sierra Club position on building a new bridge over the Saint Croix.

The Sierra Club's postion reported in the Stillwater Gazette:

The Sierra Club has supported more modestly scaled bridge designs since the 1990s," Rickard said. "As part of their analysis, MnDOT evaluated smaller scaled designs and did find that they could provide adequate capacity, but they rejected these types of designs because they believe the new bridge has to be designed for 80,000-pound semis to go unimpeded at 65 miles per hour. That clearly is not the situation today."

The bridge proposal in current form would place a four-lane span across the St. Croix River from Oak Park Heights into Wisconsin. The existing Stillwater Lift Bridge would be turned into a foot and bicycle bridge as part of a larger loop of trails.

"We also believe an alignment closer to downtown Stillwater would have less total impact on the riverway," Rickard said. "Such an alignment would address the traffic concerns in downtown Stillwater while using the existing bluff cuts on the Wisconsin side to reduce total impacts on the river."

Bachmann doesn't give a damn what the bridge would cost or look like or its impact on the local businesses.

This visualization should help clear up misconceptions.
